This is an overview of the 4 Gospels designed to introduce and give a brief summation of the teachings.
What does canonical mean? The religious usage of the word means to follow a principle or rule.
What does the Gospel mean? Good news, they’re spreading the good news!
Each author wrote their book to spread the good news of Jesus. The authors were trying to teach people about God. The intent was for theology, not a journalistic story as we know it today.
The Gospel is not one of these Books. The Gospel is just the message of Jesus.
These stories are about the life of Jesus. They share accounts of Jesus working miracles, and standing up for the poor, the weak, and the sick. They tell about His death, the crucifixion, and His rising three days later—the resurrection.
The first three books are “the synoptic” Gospels, as they are all telling a very similar story.
The fourth book, John, is written for people to believe in Jesus.
